The Grivel G12 New Matic Crampons are a classic 12-point crampon designed for general mountaineering, alpinism, mixed ice and rock climbing, and moderate waterfall routes.
The four points that are perpendicular to the crampon rails, prevent shearing in soft snow and improve security while descending (facing outward). The crampons are fully adjustable by hand, without tools and one size fits all. G12 is easily folded for transportation. Antibott plates included.
Despite the modern climber’s tendency to use crampons with more technical capacity and weight than necessary it should be remembered that virtually every “hard” alpine route in Alaska or Chamonix may be done with G12. The horizontal front points provide better support in hard snow than vertically oriented points so G12 is especially suited to maritime climates where rime ice (rather than water ice) is expected.

New-Matic Bindings: An evolution of the Cramp-O-Matic system which utilizes the C-O-M rear bale and lever. The plastic harness system is hinged to two front posts which retain the boot securely even if it has a shallow front welt, the welt is worn down completely or overboots are being used. It is a simple and efficient binding, far more versatile than the original Cramp-O-Matic. The harness is made from the strongest, most durable plastic available -Zytel DuPont, developed for the manufacture of alpine ski bindings - but obviously, it cannot last forever. So please, after long and severe use replace the harness the same way you would resole trekking boots or rock climbing shoes.
*When comparing price to other crampons, consider that Grivel G12 crampons come standard with Anti-Bott anti-balling plates. Anti-botts are flexible sheets that prevent snow build-up beneath the crampon. The Anti-bott is essential for safety in wet snow conditions.
