The Grivel G12 Cramp-o-matic Crampons are a classic 12-point crampon designed for general mountaineering, alpinism, mixed ice and rock climbing, and moderate waterfall routes.
The four points that are perpendicular to the crampon rails, prevent shearing in soft snow and improve security while descending (facing outward). The crampons are fully adjustable by hand, without tools and one size fits all. G12 is easily folded for transportation. Antibott plates included.
Despite the modern climber’s tendency to use crampons with more technical capacity and weight than necessary it should be remembered that virtually every “hard” alpine route in Alaska or Chamonix may be done with G12. The horizontal front points provide better support in hard snow than vertically oriented points so G12 is especially suited to maritime climates where rime ice (rather than water ice) is expected.

Cramp-o-matic Bindings: A well known system that relies on a stainless steel wire/nylon speed lever at the rear and a stainless steel front bale to hold the boot. Quick to put on, these bindings are perfect for plastic mountaineering boots that have a rigid sole and substantial heel and toe welts. The stainless steel safety strap, which was invented by Grivel, is permanently mounted on the front bale and prevents total loss of the crampon should it be forced off the boot.
*When comparing price to other crampons, consider that Grivel G12 crampons come standard with Anti-Bott anti-balling plates. Anti-botts are flexible sheets that prevent snow build-up beneath the crampon. The Anti-bott is essential for safety in wet snow conditions.
